A very symbolic church high up on the Tibidabo hill that looks out over Barcelona. This church can be visited on the same day as a visit to the Tibidabo amusement park.
The Catholic Church of The Sacred Heart of Jesus is a large church on the summit of Tibidabo mountain. The church and the nearby Tibidabo amusement park offer breathtaking views over Barcelona. Construction started in 1902 with the final work completed in 1961. The church is designed by Enric Sagnier in Romanesque and Gothic style. It was completed by his son Josep Maria Sagnier i Vidal. At the top of the church is a giant statue of Jesus that overlooks Barcelona.
The inside of the church with its three naves is impressive and decorated with stained-glass and paintings. There are impressivly huge support columns rising to the roof. You can take a lift to the very top of the church, and arrive next to the statue of Jesus. At this height you will see some outstanding views of Barcelona.
The church is next to the Tibidabo amusement park so both attractions can be visited at the same time.
How To Get To The Sacred Heart Of Jesus Church
One of the best ways to arrive at the Sacred Heart from the center of Barcelona, is to catch a train at one of the three main train stations – Pl. Catalunya, Provença, or Gràcia. Here, take the S1 or S2 line of the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya, towards Terrassa Nacions Unides or Sabadell Parc Nord (respectively).
The stop where you should get off is called Peu del Funicular, this has a direct connection to the funicular at the Vallvidrera Inferior station. Take the funicular railway to Vallvidrera Superior, and the take bus number 111 for the last three kilometers of the trip.
In summer, when the amusement park is open, you can catch the Tibidabo bus direct from Plaza Catalyuna to the Tibidabo amusement park and the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. This is the very best option to get to Tibidabo.
