Mercat de Sant Antoni, Barcelona opened in 1882 and is still in use to this day as a popular indoor market.
Originally, this was an open air market in the El Raval district. It later changed to an indoor market under the design of architect Antoni Rovira i Trias. Construction began in 1879 and completed in 1882. The market was later reformed in 2007.
The building’s construction in brick with a metal framework, typical of such indoor markets at the time. One thing that is interesting is the very fine details within this brick and metal structure. The design of a simple brick and metal structure becomes iconic when viewing the artistic details of the building’s exterior. The windows being one example, striking emblematic shapes form the various windows around the structure.
Today, over 140 years later, the market is still in use as originally intended. The market is popular with locals, but much fewer tourists as the famous La Boqueria market on La Rambla. There is an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables, cheese, meats, and many other household necessities. On Sundays, there is a separate collector’s market that you will find on the outside of the market.
The market prides its self on quality fresh produce that arrives daily. A great place to come and shop, especially if you are staying in a rented apartment in Barcelona.
