La Boqueria market is a famous market that is loved by tourists. The market is situated half way down the famous La Rambla street of Barcelona.
The Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria known as La Boqueria is near the famous Liceu Theatre. It has a main entrance on La Rambla and another entrance at its rear. There has been a market on this site in one form or another since 1217. During the hundreds of years that followed, many other markets were formed on this same site.
The market in its final form was constructed under the direction of architect Mas Vila in 1840. After several modifications the market was finally completed in 1850 with the famous roof being constructed in 1914. This makes the completed structure of this market more modern than Mercat de la Llibertat and Mercat Sant Antoni.
The market is quite massive, with over 2500 square meters of floor space occupied by over 300 market stalls. The Boqueria Market has just about everything on sale, from fresh fish to flowers. You may find it pretty difficult to imagine something that isn’t sold at this market!
The market, due to its proximity to the famous La Rambla street, does have many tourists that visit it. However, the fast-paced, hustle bustle of this market only adds to its appeal and charm.
